Singer Niall Horan has had a hectic few years touring with his band One Direction and making five albums – but golf has helped him find vital downtime throughout.
“I just found it was my way of relaxing,” says the accomplished golfer who now has a handicap of just 12.
The 22-year-old took up the sport at primary school when a group of friends started joining a local golf club. Inspired by Tiger Woods, the dominant golfer at the time, Niall thought to himself “I’m going to make something of my summer and get involved.”
Little did he realise just how involved he would eventually become. Golf soon became a passion, helping him unwind and deal with the immense pressures he faced when he joined the mega band One Direction. Whatever the stresses of life on the road, golf was a great way for Niall to escape, find some peace and just relax.
“When I was on tour it was a good thing to get away from everything,” he explains. “Every day was quite intense with lots of people hanging around. Just to be able to go on the golf course and have the day to yourself is pretty cool.”
Niall and his bandmates from One Direction, including Harry Styles who is also a golfer, are on a break for the rest of the year. Now Niall has even more time to get into golf and has recently acted as caddy to golf legend Rory McIlory. Niall has also just launched a new business Modest Golf Management which looks likely to focus on supporting talented new players.
